SitePoint (www.sitepoint.com) is one of the great sources of information on WordPress and other web design topics. They posted an article on the best current design frameworks (www.sitepoint.com/best-web-designing-frameworks-2014/), and listed these frameworks:

  • Twitter Bootstrap 3 (getbootstrap.com)
    • There are scores of WP themes based on the Bootstrap framework
  • Foundation Framework by Zurb (foundation.zurb.com)
    • As of today (1/3/14) there are 15 themes based on Foundation, at wordpress.org.
  • Compass (compass-style.org)
    • Four WP themes found based on Compass
  • Yahoo Pure CSS (purecss.io)
    • Two WP themes mention “YUI (Yahoo User Inter face) Grid layout support.” I’m guessing this might be similar to Pure CSS, perhaps an earlier version.
  • Gumby Framework (gumbyframework.com)
    • No WP themes found based on Gumby (I don’t think, based on searching for “Gumby” at wordpress.org)
  • InK Interface Kit (ink.sapo.pt)
    • No WP themes found based on InK Interface (I don’t think…)
  • Skeleton (www.getskeleton.com)
    • No WP themes found based on Skeleton (I don’t think…)
  • Responsive Grid System (www.responsivegridsystem.com)
    • No WP themes found based on Responsive Grid System (though of course, many WP themes are responsive and use grid-based systems)
  • Base (matthewhartman.github.com/base/)
    • No WP themes found based on Base (I don’t think…)
  • Fluid Baseline Grid (fluidbaselinegrid.com)
    • No WP themes found based on Fluid Baseline Grid (I don’t think…)

Not mentioned in the article was Headway Themes (headwaythemes.com), which I came across recently. This appears to be a really great tool, a WYSIWYG drag-n-drop tool for creating your own web design, based on a grid system or a block system. Full WP integration, including Buddy Press, MultiUser, Woo Commerce and more.
